Explore the Read House with a special focus on the Read Family (1797–1836). Students will compare and contrast daily life two hundred years ago with today’s modern lifestyles to learn how the Read family and their servants worked and lived in the early 1800s.

Experience life through the eyes of a Read child! Students will compare and contrast families today with those in the 1800s. They’ll participate in hands-on activities in the front parlor, where families gathered, and in the nursery, where babies and young children lived, learned, played, and ate over 200 years ago. Students will take home and decorate their own 19th-century Reward of Merit. Recommended specifically for grades K–2.

Many servants worked for the Read family to maintain their wealthy lifestyle and impressive home. Interpreters will lead students through the gardens, laundry, and washhouse to discover what life was like for those who worked for the Read family. Students will also apply their learning in hands-on activities that explore how those living and working at the Read House accessed, prepared, and used basic ingredients like butter and luxurious ones like ginger to craft special recipes. Recommended specifically for grades 2–3.

Have you ever dreamed of playing a giant game of I-Spy in a colonial town? We certainly did! Students will follow the leader across the cobblestone paths of New Castle in search of centuries-old fixtures, public and private buildings, and transportation methods to discover what life was like in the 1800s. Recommended specifically for grades K–2.

Documents can tell us a lot about the past, but they can’t tell us everything. How can tiny archeological artifacts and massive architectural structures teach us about life in the 1800s? In Read House & the Big, Wide World, students will participate in a hands-on learning session and a walking tour of the town to learn how historians use a variety of primary sources to study the past. Recommended specifically for grades 2–3.
