Get Your Questions Answered
You are welcome to request a group tour as early as you’d like. We recommend you do so between 18 months and 1 month before your desired visit date. However, please note that all group visits must be booked at least 4 weeks in advance. If you’re planning to visit during our busiest group months (November, December, April, May), you’ll want to request your desired date(s) as soon as possible to guarantee that we can accommodate your group.
Once you’ve reviewed pricing and availability, you’ll want to fill out our Adult Group Request Form. Please note, your request form is not a confirmation. Once you submit your form, our Education Coordinator (EC) will review the request and get back to you within 72 business hours. You will then work together with the EC to finalize the dates, times, and other details. The EC will send you a formal confirmation and invoice directly.
Leave all the coordinating to us! The historic sites in New Castle are all managed by different organizations, but we are happy to work with our colleagues to create an exciting and varied itinerary for your group. Just mark off any sites you’re interested in visiting on the Group Tour Request Form and we’ll take care of the rest.
Be prepared to divide into small groups of 14 or fewer. Not only are small groups necessary to navigate tighter rooms and stairways, they will also allow for more interactive experiences.
Where should we park? If you plan on arriving by car, parking is free and available along the Strand and throughout Historic New Castle. If you plan to take a bus, your group must load/unload at the bus loading zone at the southeast corner of 2nd and Harmony Streets. The bus may then park in the lot on 4th and Chestnut Streets. Buses are not permitted on the Strand for any reason.
Yes! We are happy to accommodate any needs your group may have. If anyone in your group has special needs please contact us in advance, so that we can work with you to plan the best possible trip. Email us anytime at rh****@de*******.org or give us a call during our normal hours of operation at (302) 322-8411. For those who have permanent or temporary mobility impairments, the 1st floor of the House (8 rooms) is completely accessible by wheelchair. However, because of the historic construction there is no wheelchair access to the basement or 2nd floor (7 additional rooms). But those with mobility impairments can still enjoy the Read House! They will join in the full tour of the 1st floor to experience the front hall, parlors, kitchen, pantry, and more. Once the tour is ready to move upstairs, they can choose their own experience. They may enjoy the historic kitchen and flip through our book with images and information about both floors, or video chat with the tour, so that they can continue along with the group and ask questions. We’ll provide all of the equipment, of course!
New Castle is home to a number of charming restaurants and shops, most of which are within walking distance of the Read House. Please contact the restaurants in advance for group reservations as seating can sometimes be limited. If you are interested in hosting a catered lunch, you may wish to rent space at the historic Arsenal (located just behind the Read House on 2nd Street). For information about renting the Arsenal call New Castle Historical Society at (302) 322-2794.
If you still have other questions, please email us at rh****@de*******.org or call us at (302) 322-8411.
